are we are celebrating the fact that nasheed is our new president? or are we celebrating the downfall of maumoon?
none i would say.
i certainly am happy or am celebrating because we now have found the entrance to the road to democracy and with it the chances of prosperity and development in the maldives.
i will not discredit efforts by maumoon. he in fact did contribute a lot to the national development. but he failed when he started to believe and profess that there was no one else other than himself who think well for maldives and has the capability to bring changes. he failed when he wanted to remain the president forever without giving way to other educated people.
as we have seen with the case of dhiraagu and wathaniyya, competition reduces the prices and creates innovation. competition makes one individual to do better than another. likewise, healthy competition for the presidency will ensure that the person in office and the other person(s) aspiring to come into office will work harder and will lead to innovative ideas and solutions for problems. the role of political parties is important too, as it is a group concensus and effort that propels the leader.
hurray for this new found freedom. now we await what nasheed’s coalition (keeping in mind that the coalition is a group of president hopefuls) brings to our national development. and also to see how many political parties we eventually would end up with. i hope there are no additional parties and that some of the existing ones will merge into one, please!
Truly said that power corrupts.
This was one man who could have owned the country and left a grand legacy.
I pity him.
